After searching the archives of the New York Times online for ‘Italian American’, limiting my results to the year 1941-42, I came across an article from March 4, 1942 entitled ‘Evacuation Area set for Japanese in Pacific States’. The article detailed the geographic scope of new restrictions put in place for enemy aliens, and their forced relocation, illustrated by a map. Though it mentioned mostly the Japanese, it was a measure that was implemented against all enemy aliens, and the article does mention Italians and Germans also. Furthermore, whilst it does describe in great detail the measures put in place by the government, it says nothing of the reasons for doing so. The utility of the article is therefore somewhat limited with regards to my specific topic, however it is interesting to note that the article is on the front cover of the paper, suggesting the prominence of the enemy alien issue.
