Historical Research Workshop

Introduction: Olivia Marston

Hey everyone, my name is Olivia and I’m a junior exchange student from the UK, majoring in History. I’m particularly interested in 19th-century/ mostly 20th-century Social History, however I don’t have a specific focus yet. I’m taking this course to hopefully figure that out, and to learn vital research skills that as yet I’m unfamiliar with. I’m especially excited about taking a Decal course as we don’t have anything like this back at my home university!

Ah yes, narrowing your topic is definitely one of the frustrating things about research – especially considering all the cool things out there. Hopefully as we progress with the semester and cover some more media and methods you might find some help with choosing your topic. But social history is still a relativeley new area of focus in the grand scheme of history especially because of historical antecedents of elite-centric studies. Thus needless to say, there are many topics that have not been researched yet and even some that you can build upon for yourself.
Here’s to a good semester and good research!
